THE SPITFIRE ASSOCIATION INC.

OUR PURPOSE
The Spitfire Association was formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1960. The Association has three principal purposes:

  1. to commemorate, through ANZAC Day and other special events, the extraordinary actions of our members who served in wartime to defend and continue our democracy and freedoms;
  2. to keep alive the memory of the Spitfire, an aircraft that set new standards in aviation technology, giving out founding members the means to achieve their objectives in theatres of war around the world; and
  3. to support and grow the Spitfire Memorial Defence Fellowship Scheme (administered by The University of NSW and the Australian Defence Force), in order to ensure that future generations of Australians have the opportunity to contribute excellent research in the area of defence.

SPITFIRE MEMORIAL DEFENCE FELLOWSHIP SCHEME

This annually awarded fellowship has been established by Ex-wartime Spitfire Pilots and their ground crews, the Spitfire Association and leading private and corporate supporters as a lasting and dynamic memorial to the significant contribution of the Spitfire and it's squadrons during World War II.

The fellowship provides encouragement for the development of advanced knowledge and expertise which will aid the defence of Australia by financial support (currently $15,000 per annum) and public recognition to senior students and academics who will undertake programs of study or research at the University of NSW (The Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra or Sydney) or other appropriate institutions within or outside Australia.

Since it's inception in 1998 seven fellowships have been awarded and all recipients have achieved and been recognised for their excellent research. Some years however an award has not been made as applicants have not shown sufficient merit.

This fellowship is open to Australian Citizens who are suitably qualified graduates or who have significant appropriate work experience and feel enthusiasm to meet the above mentioned criteria.

This is an unusual Memorial to participants of World War II, the survivors being less concerned with monuments and plaques but more with the future and protection of their country. It is a unique Memorial, a living Memorial which cannot be vandalized and does not require refurbishing.

The Spitfire Fellowship wishes to attract worthy applicants and therefore wider publicity is necessary in all its various forms.

This Fund also wishes to maintain the high standard that it has already achieved and to do so requires donations from supporters. These donations are tax deductible and are very much appreciated to increase the value of the fellowship in ensuring years.

For general information regarding the fellowship contact the Spitfire Association. For technical or further information contact the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).
