Spitfire Variants shown here may be of interest to you. The aircraft as it was originally designed was half the weight and power of the last Spitfire. Therefore you can see that there were many changes made to keep up with the improvements in the opposition's aircraft.

Painting Spitfire spacer

This picture was painted by the famous aviation artist Michael turner and shows the as yet unpainted prototype Spitfire K5054 flying over the Supermarine hangar at Eastleigh in March 1936, watched by its legendary designer R.J. Mitchell beside his yellow and black Rolls Royce.

Editor's note: If you look closely you will see that the picture is signed by the equally legendary Spitfire test pilot, the late Alex Henshaw, who was quite a man.
